Water and Energy

Thirsty Energy:

Since August 2012, I have been a consultant for the World Bank, providing technical and strategic support to “Thirsty Energy”, an initiative to ensure energy security in a water constrained world. With this initiative, I have been working in Morocco, South Africa and China together with the team to integrate water constraints into the energy sector and better address water and energy challenges.

From waste to Resource:

Developing a series of case studies that highlight best practices in wastewater treatment. The goal is to systematize the rich knowledge and experience that exists on the topics of integrated planning, financing and regulation of wastewater treatment and resource recovery. The case studies focus on the financial/contractual arrangements and innovative designs that promote resource recovery (i.e., wastewater reuse, energy production, etc) and that enhance the financial and environmental sustainability of wastewater treatment plants.

Water and Energy Access to empower rural communities

I am very interested in social entrepreneurship and I have been engaged with several initiatives to promote decentralized solutions for rural areas, such as:

eluma.org – this project aims to ensure that rural electrification provides sustainable development for rural communities in Sierra Leone. Rural electrification alone does not guarantee economic development: Small and medium enterprises need to be empowered to ensure economic growth. The goal of eluma is to provide a platform where local entrepreneurs will be able to start businesses that make the best possible use of electricity and water to jump-start the economy and catalyze its growth. For more information on the project click here

lumalight – I received a Technology Dissemination Fellowship from the MIT International Development Initiative to establish an innovative solar light rental business pilot with rural entrepreneurs. Shared the conclusions and results of the pilot with several solar light companies. For move information on the pilot you can check the video I created here or the blog here

Sustainable Energy Challenge

I was part of this global project during my 2 years at MIT (2010-2012). My research was part of this multi-disciplinary research programme that investigates the effects of scarcity in natural resources, such as land, water and minerals, on patterns of energy supply and consumption. It also examines how technology can improve energy production in an increasingly resource-constrained world.
